How To Wear Those Pastels | Fall 2013’s Biggest Statement

If the number of chalky blues and baby pinks are any indication of what to expect this Fall, it is safe to say that Pastels are here to stay. At the Céline, Rochas and Carven shows, among many others, designers sent out a startling array of garments in colours that looked straight out of the nursery. There were boxy pullovers, skirt hems ended below the knee and, most unexpectedly, all manner of coats — tailored, mannish and often oversize. But, the all impending question remains, how do you pull off sugary pastels without looking like an artisanal ice cream sundae?

The key, if you’re wondering, is offsetting the pale palette with autumnal colours. Under one of the season’s big pastel wrap coats, think basics in shades of camel, gray and winter white. Or take a cue from the Chloé pre-fall collection and add an impetuous pop: crimson pants. (Rust-colored trousers or cords will also do the trick.)

For accessories, here are some ideas. A bag in dark green, like this new duffel shape from Reece Hudson, or in gray, will make a pretty fall complement. These slip-ons from Stella McCartney with a tortoiseshell block heel are divine, and oxfords are good, too while the rose gold jewelry, like these barbed-wire earrings from Rodarte or the Miansai cuffs, adds a bit of toughness. Sweet, but with a touch of needed spice.
